Susanne S. D. Themlitz is a Portuguese-German artist with a multidisciplinary practice that spans sculpture, drawing, installation, painting, photography, and video. Drawing on a wide variety of materials, her work depicts dreamlike worlds inhabited by hybrid figures whose bodies are assemblages of human, animal, and plant elements. Through a language marked by metamorphosis, the artist creates a museum of imaginary creatures where she questions the boundaries between the natural and the artificial, the living and the inanimate. Her work establishes a dialogue with art history, natural science, popular narrative, and the childhood imagination, exploring themes such as memory, dreams, and the unconscious. This combination of conceptual inquiry and poetic dimension makes Susanne Themlitz one of the most original artists in contemporary Portuguese art.
Since the 1990s, the artist has presented solo and group exhibitions in Portugal, Germany, Spain, and France. Her work is included in major public and private collections, such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Serralves Museum, the EDP Foundation, the Carmona e Costa Foundation, the Elvas Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Santander Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Throughout her career, she has been honored with numerous awards, most notably the Drawing Prize at the 5th Caldas da Rainha Biennial (1993), the Dr. Best Foundation Award (Cologne, 2000), the City Desk Sculpture Award (2001), and the Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Award in the video category (2007).
