Programme:
Inspired by the Buddhist book A Man Who Can Recall His Past Lives, Weerasethakul crafts a hypnotic meditation on memory, death, reincarnation and the continuity between the world of the living and that of the spirits. The film follows Boonmee, who, suffering from acute kidney failure, decides to spend his final days with his family at a farm in northern Thailand. As death draws near, he is visited by the ghost of his late wife, who returns to care for him, and by his long-lost son, now transformed into a mysterious forest spirit. Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, Uncle Boonmee is widely regarded as one of the most important films of the 21st century.
