Programme:
Orpheus is a poetic, dreamlike and modernist reinterpretation of the legend of Orpheus, set in post-war Paris. The film follows the celebrated poet Orpheus (Jean Marais) on a supernatural journey between the world of the living and that of the dead, where he encounters a mysterious princess who seems to exist between both realms. Combining romance, fantasy and tragedy, Jean Cocteau crafts a unique meditation on love, artistic creation and mortality. With cinematography of extraordinary elegance and inventive special effects, Orpheus transforms cinema into a poetic portal between worlds, much like the mirrors it evokes.
