I Walked with a Zombie

Betsy, a young Canadian nurse, travels to a Caribbean island to care for the wife of a sugar cane plantation owner, who is suffering from a strange form of catatonia. As she settles on the island, she is confronted by an atmosphere of growing unease, where voodoo rituals seem to bridge the worlds of the living and the dead. Far beyond supernatural horror, the film—one of Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s favorites—explores the scars of slavery and colonialism through a style of cinema characterized by poetic abstraction.
