About a film, about a poem

The cinematic and poetic arts are deeply intertwined. Films inspired by poems, poems born from cinematic works, or filmmakers who root their deepest expressions in poetic language—these are just a few dimensions of this interdisciplinary relationship. In their visual, rhythmic and formal potency, the two arts are often brought into creative comparison. ‘A film is never really good unless the camera is an eye in the head of a poet,’ said Orson Welles. And through the words of poets, what makes a film unique? For the poetry exhibition About a film, about a poem, we invited six poets with different relationships with cinema to write about a film of their choice, based on shots, images, characters, dialogues or even viewing experiences. These works by Gabriela do Amaral, Hugo Miguel Santos, Miguel Manso, Ondjaki, Raquel Lima and Regina Guimarães will be on show in Foyer 1.
