To celebrate the 25 April revolution, Batalha presents If Cinema is a Weapon, a programme of films exploring the transformative power of cinema and how it can be used in liberation struggles today, in Portugal and throughout the world.

A group of curators invited by Batalha — filmmaker Fradique, researcher and curator Janaína Oliveira, photographer and curator Manuela Matos Monteiro, and director and programmer Rita Morais — have put together a programme that addresses a number of different liberation gestures through cinema.

Featuring fiction and documentary works that transcend aesthetic, cultural and geographic borders, the programme echoes the spirit of freedom heralded by April in order to discuss ideas about justice and equality. These films from Portugal, but also from Brazil, Palestine, Hong Kong and Nigeria, denounce oppression and reveal different historical perspectives, thus becoming important acts of resistance.
