Cineclube Matinees

Based on the desire to revive a historical connection dating back to the 1940s, Batalha invited Cineclube do Porto to bring back the matinees that took place in this space for decades. Every other Sunday, we revisit key moments in the life of Portugal's oldest active film club, exploring its role in the city and the country.
Between April and June, the programme aims to revisit the short-format screenings presented by the Cineclube between the late 1950s and the 1970s, featuring films that were shown in 8mm, Super 8, and 16mm. These screenings, less formal and outside the commercial circuit, established themselves as a privileged space for experimentation and discovery, allowing Porto’s audience to access innovative works that would rarely make it to movie theaters.

Two classic comedies stand out: The Man in the White Suit, a scathing satire on progress and industry, screened in anticipation of the Cineclube’s 81st anniversary, and Le carrosse d’or, in which Anna Magnani shines in Jean Renoir’s theatrical fable about desire and power. The programme also includes The Ernie Game, a psychological drama that delves into the alienation of youth in the 1960s, as well as screenings of short films by Alain Resnais and Norman McLaren.
