Matías Piñeiro

One of Argentina’s most influential contemporary filmmakers, Matías Piñeiro stands out for the way he weaves together classical literature and the everyday urban lives of young adults in his country, exploring the tensions between desire and loneliness.

Renowned for his free adaptations of Shakespeare—collected under the title Las Shakespeariadas—the Argentine filmmaker creates films in which the interplay between words and gestures becomes a space for invention and freedom. With his latest film, You Burn Me (2024), Piñeiro expands his universe to include new literary references, continuing to explore the boundaries between theatre, literature and cinema with formal and emotional curiosity.

A regular presence at some of the most prominent international festivals, he has established himself as one of the most inventive voices of his generation, with a practice characterised by a distinctive style and playful energy.

At Batalha, we present a selection of Piñeiro’s works, accompanying the launch of the first book dedicated to the filmmaker—co-published with Fireflies Press—and a masterclass.
