New Moons: Daniel Soares

Daniel Soares is one of the most promising names in contemporary Portuguese cinema. A director, screenwriter, and photographer, he creates work that crosses geographical and formal boundaries, marked by a refined visual language and a keen eye for the collision between intimate daily life and external influences. His short films have been screened at leading festivals such as Cannes, Locarno, Clermont-Ferrand, and IndieLisboa, receiving several awards. His works include the satire on Lisbon gentrification Mau por Um momento (2024), winner of a Special Mention at the Cannes Film Festival, the rural narrative short film O Que Resta (2021), awarded in Angers and at IndieLisboa, and the alpine fiction Please Make It Work (2022), made at the Locarno Academy. In 2025, Soares was one of four Portuguese filmmakers selected for Berlinale Talents and became a member of the European Film Academy. He is co-founder of the production company Kid with a Bike and his portfolio also includes the direction of music videos.
At Batalha, we present a session dedicated to his work, a cinema marked by sensitive contemplation of rhythms and images, and by a keen involvement with the drama of social dynamics.
