The work of Kamal Aljafari, Palestinian director and key figure in contemporary cinema, focuses on the reconstruction of personal and collective memory, particularly that of the Palestinian people.
Born in Ramla, he has developed a cinematic language that pushes the boundaries of documentary and essayistic cinema, transforming archival images into political and aesthetic tools. His films, screened at numerous film festivals and celebrated by critics, focus on themes such as dispossession, memory, exile, and the material and symbolic importance of the “archive”: it is in the counter-archive under construction — defined by the director as “the camera of the dispossessed” — that Aljafari allows the reiteration in the world of stories and presences that Zionist ideology systematically seeks to silence or erase — but which always resist.
At Batalha, we welcome the filmmaker for a masterclass and the screening of a comprehensive selection of his film work, including the Porto premiere of his new film, With Hasan in Gaza.
