As Meninas Exemplares, João Botelho

The sources of inspiration for Paula Rego's work are not limited to the visual arts, but intersect with other artistic expressions such as cinema, theatre, literature and poetry — privileged territories of the stories that inspire her. This is the case with the book Les Petites Filles Modèles (1858) by the Countess of Ségur, which captivated the artist from childhood and ultimately inspired João Botelho's film tribute to Paula Rego. This exhibition, which accompanies the film's premiere and includes drawings and engravings by Rego, focuses on Ségur's vast influence on the artistic universes of the painter and filmmaker.
