As Meninas Exemplares, João Botelho

As Meninas Exemplares, João Botelho's new film, is a tribute to the artist Paula Rego, inspired by the work of the same name by the Countess of Ségur. In the context of the screening of the feature film at Batalha, Botelho presents an exhibition dedicated to Rego's artistic practice at the Cinema Centre, featuring engravings and drawings.
Paula Rego (1935–2022) was one of the most remarkable contemporary Portuguese artists. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where she spent most of her career. Her work, deeply narrative and symbolic, evolved from surreal compositions to hybrid and allegorical figures, addressing themes such as childhood, power and the female condition. She represented Portugal and the United Kingdom at several biennials and, in 1990, became the first artist in residence at the National Gallery.
