David Bowie's life and music inspired Todd Haynes in this film, whose title is borrowed from one of the rock chameleon's songs. With an initial reference to Oscar Wilde — one of the musician's icons — Velvet Goldmine focuses its narrative on the figure of Brian Slade, a pop artist who stages his own death on stage, just like Bowie ‘killed’ his character Ziggy Stardust. A decade later, journalist Arthur Stuart tracks him down to write an article about his life and fall from stardom. At the time of its release, Bowie denounced the film and did not authorise the use of his songs on the soundtrack.
