On the weekend of its 81st anniversary, the Cineclube do Porto presents a satirical comedy from the 1950s that remains disturbingly relevant today. Sidney Stratton, a brilliant yet socially awkward young scientist, invents a revolutionary fabric: indestructible and stain-resistant. Every consumer’s dream quickly becomes the textile industry’s nightmare—if clothes don’t wear out, there’s no business. Employers and unions, rarely in agreement, join forces to stop the invention. With biting humor, the film questions a system that would rather halt progress than lose profits.
