Considered one of Ōshima’s most subversive films, The Ceremony harshly criticises post-war Japanese society through the portrait of a wealthy family, the Sakurada. The clan’s attempts to keep up appearances and fulfil social norms mask a history marked by dysfunctionality, abuse, incest, nationalism, failure and humiliation — a decline that is slowly revealed in the family’s traditional ceremonies.
