In the words of Walter Salles, "Terra Estrangeira addresses a feeling of not belonging and of orphanhood that the Fernando Collor de Mello years highlighted. This exile is at once political, economic, and existential". It is amid this wave of national anguish that Brazilian Paco crosses an ocean to reach Portugal. There, he meets other Brazilians who feel increasingly foreign, among them Alex (Fernanda Torres) and Miguel (Alexandre Borges).
