Filmed directly from a cell phone screen, Steve Hates Fish follows a real-time translation app—programmed to convert French into English—that John Smith deliberately manipulates, using it on a London shopping street to translate signs that have nothing to do with French. As the software struggles to fulfill its impossible mission, absurd translations and accidental puns emerge. In this installation, the mistakes reveal the ridiculousness of literal translation and expose the comical side of misunderstanding. An ironic reflection on the noise of language—linguistic, cultural, and technological—in a world saturated with information.
