Sunny is a singer in a fading band that drifts through run-down stages across the GDR. She lives off her music—and despite her precarious circumstances, refuses to conform. Inspired by a real-life figure and embodying the youth’s longing for freedom and individuality in East Germany, Solo Sunny was Konrad Wolf’s final film and became an unexpected phenomenon on both sides of the Wall. Surrounded by controversy, the film survived censorship attempts and now returns in a restored version, with vibrant images of a vanished East Berlin and a restless portrait of a woman determined to live life on her own terms.
