A self-confessed fan of David Cronenberg, Julia Ducournau shares his interest in the themes of death and the human condition. Premiering at Cannes in 2016, her first feature-length film follows a vegetarian teenager who, on arriving at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, develops an insatiable appetite for raw flesh and discovers a dark side to her identity. Brimming with violence and sexuality, Raw portrays the various hungers and uncertainties of adolescence. Further, the film challenges the usual dynamics of female power in horror, placing women in control of their carnal desires.
