Quem Foste, Alvarez?

Noémia Delgado’s last film, this documentary is dedicated to the Porto-based modernist painter José Dominguez Alvarez (1906–1942), whose life story prior to 1924 remains largely unknown. Everything—or at least much of it—must now be pieced together from his paintings, drawings, and sketches. Combining archival materials with reenactments of moments from the artist’s life and testimonials from Fernando Lanhas, Guilherme Camarinha, and Jaime Isidoro, the narrative explores the mysteries surrounding his artistic and personal existence.
