Anderson’s strange and subversive take on a romantic comedy casts Adam Sandler in an atypical role: that of Barry Egan, an entrepreneur with social anxiety who has been bullied by his sisters since childhood. A loner, Barry finds refuge in collecting coupons and in the unlikely relationship he develops with Lena (Emily Watson), a colleague of one of his sisters. His life changes when a call he makes to a phone sex line embroils him in a blackmail scam. Forced to face his fears, Barry fights to regain control of his own life. Punch-Drunk Love won Anderson the Best Director Award at Cannes.
