In Red Wood Pigeon, Nanni Moretti once more blends comedy and political satire in the story of Michele Apicella, a water polo player and leader of the Communist Party. After an accident causes him to lose his memory, Michele seeks to rebuild his own identity over the course of a match that lasts all day and into the night. Rarely leaving the swimming pool, he confronts both his opponents and the ghosts of ideology. Amid references to Doctor Zhivago and “I’m on Fire”, by Bruce Springsteen, one certainty is heard again and again: “words matter”. A masterpiece that consolidated Moretti’s leading status within Italian cinema.
