The Magic Springs of Gerenia

If there is one filmmaker who inhabited the subsoil of Portuguese cinema, it was António de Macedo. In this theatrical, spatial and humanist fable, the director seeks to address the unique character of life and the passing of time. Shot in the vicinity of the castle at Montemor-o-Velho, The Magic Springs of Gerenia sets us off on the hunt for an old librarian who has mysteriously disappeared in a small city. At the heart of the intrigue are folk traditions, a secret passageway and an old treasure. Macedo seeks to look beyond the plot and genre to comment on how a life can only be lived once, and the relationships that can, suddenly, become locked away in infinity.
