Programme:
In a family-run brothel somewhere in the Portuguese countryside, tension is mounting. A Russian mafia demands the sacrifice of one of the manager’s daughters as recompense for a breach of trust. Based on a Greek tragedy, In the Darkness of the Night is one of João Canijo’s most accomplished films, in which the camera wanders amongst the brothel girls and their clients, weaving the narratives together—a process that would prove central to his future work. This screening will feature the original version, which is 12 minutes longer, recovered during the film’s recent digitisation.
