William Klein follows American boxer Muhammad Ali from his decisive fight against Sonny Liston, in 1964, to the mythical “Rumble in the Jungle” against George Foreman, in Zaire, ten years later. From Cassius Clay to Ali, the film captures the athlete’s transformation into a political figure, linked to the Nation of Islam and anti-Vietnam War activism. Filmed at a turbulent time in American history, this documentary moves beyond a sporting portrait to reflect on the media, power, heroism and Black people’s struggle for civil rights in the USA.
