Between Christmas 1974 and Ash Wednesday 1975, Noémia Delgado travels through Varge, Grijó da Parada, Bemposta, Podence, Rio de Onor, and Bragança to document the centuries-old rituals of the winter cycle, linked to the solstice and the rite of passage into adulthood, which feature the caretos of Trás-os-Montes. At a time when the meaning and rigor of these practices were fading, due to a shortage of masks and costumes, but also to the phenomenon of emigration, the filmmaker documents and reenacts traditions, contributing decisively to their recovery and revitalization.
