In his first feature film, Carlos Saura steps outside the studio and works with non-professional actors to depict life in the slums of Madrid. The Delinquents follows a group of marginalized youths who turn to crime in order to help one of them pursue his dream of becoming a bullfighter—until tragedy shatters that dream. Brutally censored by the Franco regime, the film was banned in Spain and only premiered in 1962. This new restoration by the Filmoteca Española recovers the version closest to what Saura originally presented at Cannes, before the dictatorship’s cuts were imposed.
