After her grandfather’s death, his granddaughter discovers that he fought in the Spanish Civil War. It was in 1936 that David Carr, a young communist from Liverpool, decided to join the fight against fascism in Spain. Joining the Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista (Workers’ Party of Marxist Unification) and then another group of fighters, he became involved in the struggle to combat Franco’s advances — but his idealism was put to the test as his comrades are killed. The film was honoured at the Cannes Film Festival and won the César for Best Foreign Film.
