Intercepted selects some of the thousands of phone calls made by Russian soldiers from the battlefield in Ukraine, intercepted by Ukrainian intelligence services, and overlays these conversations between soldiers and their loved ones with images of the ruined lives and landscapes of the Ukrainian people. In this paradoxical and unsettling encounter, the voices of the Russian soldiers fluctuate between expressions of heroism and disillusionment, imperialist propaganda and war crimes, doubt and denial. The film invites reflection on the telephone as a device through which relationships between sound and image—and public and private spheres—are articulated, or disrupted.
