Giuliana (Monica Vitti) finds herself in a state of constant psychological shock and emotional imprisonment that perturbs her family life and those around her. An extra-marital affair with one of her husband’s colleagues intensifies her torment. With a powerful soundtrack, the first colour film by Antonioni explores some of the recurring themes in the filmmaker’s oeuvre: loneliness, distress and emotional alienation. Winner of the Golden Lion at Venice in 1967, it was screened by Cineclube on the 5th of May of 1979.
