After suffering a heart attack, Daniel Blake, a 59-year-old widowed carpenter, is told by his doctor to stop working. However, when he tries to receive the benefits granted by the Government, he finds himself entangled in an unfair and awkward bureaucracy. While waiting at a social security office, he meets Katie, a single mum who has recently moved to Newcastle. In the midst of despair, they become each other’s only hope. Awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, this is a film that is both sensitive and indignant about the poor state of the “social welfare state” in Europe.
