In a nameless village somewhere in England at an undefined moment on the cusp of the Industrial Revolution, the life of a rural community is turned upside down. The residents look on in amazement as outsiders arrive with new ideas and technologies that herald the era of modernity. The enclosure of property and the pursuit of profit and productivity soon tear up the existing social order. Adapted from the novel by Jim Crace, Harvest marks a new turn in Tsangari’s filmography: a period drama, shot in 16mm with pictorial composition and echoes of westerns and folk horror, which holds a mirror up to the transformations of our turbulent present.
