Programme:
An experimental, avant-garde filmmaker fascinated by Andalusian popular culture, José Val del Omar (1904–1982) developed a cinematic language grounded in experimentation with image, light and sound. This new performance, commissioned by Batalha for the Bar High Life, takes a form close to that of a tablao and will feature two of his works screened with live flamenco accompaniment. In Fire in Castile , Val del Omar uses TactilVisión — a pulsed lighting system of his own invention — to illuminate the religious sculptures of Juan de Juni and Alonso Berruguete, on a journey between West and East, from flight to ecstasy. Festival en las entrañas comprises the final two episodes of a series commissioned for the 1964 Exposição Universal de Nova Iorque (New York World’s Fair), about the cultural programme Festivales de España. Taking the task of documenting the initiative’s performances in different Spanish cities as his pretext, Val del Omar creates a dreamlike universe between the lyrical and the anthropological. Diego el Gavi, a Lisbon-born flamenco singer connected to the Romani musical tradition, joins Carlos Mil Homens (handclapping), João Lara Pereira (handclapping) and Sina Shirazi (flamenco guitar) in this celebration of cinema, Iberian culture and the elemental force of flamenco.
