In pseudo-documentary style, The War Game presents a simulation of the strike of a Soviet nuclear missile on British soil. The portrayal of a chaotic scenario, including the lack of emergency services and subsequent disruption of the entire social order, caused an outcry amongst the British government — which led the BBC to cancel the planned broadcast and only allow the film to be viewed in a restricted number of cinemas. It was finally broadcast by the BBC twenty years after its originally scheduled slot.
