In the 1910s, an impulsive labourer (Richard Gere), his girlfriend (Brooke Adams) and her younger sister (Linda Manz) flee Chicago for the vast wheat fields of Texas, dreaming of a new life. They pretend to be siblings and end up infiltrating the life of a lonely, sick farmer (Sam Shepard). Persuaded by her boyfriend to marry the farmer in order to inherit his fortune, the young woman enters into a dangerous game and a love triangle that leads them into a spiral of tragedy. With hypnotic, Oscar-winning photography and few dialogues, Terrence Malick paints a visual poem, awarded at Cannes, about desire, betrayal and the ephemerality of human happiness.
