Four irreverent young people set off from Kolkata to spend a weekend in a forest in the countryside, seeking to escape the monotony of city life. Amidst alcohol, games of seduction and encounters with the local population, they begin to grapple with insecurities, prejudices and vulnerabilities they would rather have ignored. With humour and melancholy, the filmmaker paints a portrait of a generation confronted with the limits of their certainties and their social standing, in one of the most incisive films about urban youth in post-independence India. The new 4K restoration we are screening was presented at Cannes in 2025 by The Film Foundation, as part of a project led by Wes Anderson and overseen by Satyajit Ray’s family.
