Programme:
This screening, dedicated to the restless gaze of Alain Resnais, brings together three short films that explore the intersections of art, memory, and cinema. In Van Gogh, the Dutch painter’s life is evoked exclusively through his canvases and drawings, brought to life by meticulous editing and a dramatic score. The following year, Gauguin would revisit the same principle: it is the artist’s own work that constructs the biographical narrative, in a film that contemplates painting without resorting to reenactments. In All the Memory in the World, Resnais guides us through the labyrinths of the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, in an essay on the human desire to archive, preserve, and organize knowledge.
