Buck and the Preacher

The directorial debut of Sidney Poitier, who also stars alongside a cast including Harry Belafonte and Ruby Dee, Buck and the Preacher broke with Hollywood tradition by casting Black actors as central figures in a Western, portraying the tension and solidarity between African Americans and Native Americans towards the end of the 19th century. The film follows Buck, an ex-soldier, and Preacher, a man masquerading as a religious speaker, as they lead a group of formerly enslaved people on the run in the American West. On the way, the two display both bravery and cunning as they fight for freedom and justice.
