Boat People, directed by Ann Hui, sparked intense controversy upon its premiere at Cannes in 1982. Critics were divided: was the portrayal of post-war life in Vietnam a genuine perspective or influenced by Chinese financial backing? Despite accusations of bias, the film established itself as a landmark of the Hong Kong New Wave. The story follows a Japanese photojournalist who returns to Vietnam and confronts the harsh realities of the communist regime. This 4K restoration, approved by the director, brings back to audiences a key work in Ann Hui’s filmography and in the history of Asian cinema.
