Considered one of the first films of the Czech New Wave, Audition marked Forman’s independent debut and foreshadowed central themes in his work: non-professional actors, biting humor, and attention to the small details of everyday life. Comprising two short films released together, the film follows two musicians who trade rehearsals for motorcycle races and a group of aspiring stars participating in an audition for Prague’s Semafor Theater. The film captures with irony and freshness the youthful rebellion of the 1960s against social and generational conformity.
