As an introduction to Batalha's new Criticism and Cinema Course, taught by Carlos Natálio and Eduarda Neves, we will screen Au Hasard Balthazar, described by Michael Haneke as “the most precious of all cinematic gems.” The film follows Balthazar, a donkey exploited and passed from owner to owner, becoming a witness to human cruelty and vices—but also to rare moments of tenderness. The film marked the debut of Anne Wiazemsky, here in the role of the sensitive young Marie, whose life, like Balthazar's, is marked by loss and violence.
