Filmed on the Island of Fogo, with a cast made up mostly of non-actors, Hanami follows the discoveries and growing pains of a young Cape Verdean girl, from her mother's belly to her teenage years. The film was honoured with the Best Emerging Filmmaker Award at Locarno, where it also received a special mention in the Best First Work category. Twinned since the 1990s, Porto and Mindelo are strengthening their cultural ties with the presentation of Denise Fernandes' first feature film. Hanami will be screened outdoors in the Cape Verdean city with the support of Batalha Centro de Cinema, which will host the Portuguese premiere of the film.
