We begin the retrospective dedicated to Miloš Forman with the filmmaker’s most award-winning film. Winner of eight Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, Amadeus is a biographical epic inspired by Peter Shaffer’s play; Shaffer also collaborated on the screenplay. The film portrays the life, successes, and tribulations of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as seen through the eyes of Antonio Salieri, his rival and contemporary. Consumed by jealousy, Salieri recounts his devotion to God and music, while envying Mozart’s divine genius. Caught between jealousy and admiration, the story reveals the tragic downfall of both rival classical composers.
