The Face You Deserve, Miguel Gomes’ first feature film, is a kind of raw diamond—an early expression of a genre and tone that would go on to define his entire body of work. Inspired by the saying “Until the age of thirty you have the face God gave you; after that, you have the face you deserve,” the film introduces us to Francisco (José Airosa), a man caught in the throes of a midlife crisis, reluctant to fully embrace adulthood.
