Towards Mathilde

Where does choreography come from? And what does it mean to choreograph? Footage of Mathilde Monnier’s creative process and the raw physicality of her elite dancers is captured on Super8 and 16mm film by directors of photography Agnès Godard and Hélène Louvart, and intercut with the choreographer’s reflections on the ‘distorted language’ of dance. This intimate, magnetising documentary acts as an intellectual pas de deux between Denis and Monnier, two provocative artists who continually push the limits of their own disciplines. Audiences in Porto will remember the performances El Baile (2008) and Please Please Please (2021), both co-authored by Monnier.
