Programme:
Premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, Jamie Babbit's daring debut feature film has become a true modern cult classic, recognised for its satire and criticism of heteronormativity, as well as its camp aesthetic full of exaggerated settings and irreverent humour. In the film, Megan—played by a young Natasha Lyonne—considers herself a typical American girl: she is a good student, a cheerleader, and has a popular boyfriend. Everything changes when her conservative parents suspect that their daughter is a lesbian and decide to enrol her in True Directions, a sexual conversion therapy camp. During her stay, Megan meets Graham, a rebellious and proudly lesbian teenager. Although still confused, Megan begins to feel something for Graham. As an added touch of satire, the film also includes a small and ironic role for RuPaul, here in the unlikely role of an ‘ex-gay’ instructor.
