Programme:
First in theater and later in cinema, the telephone was widely explored for its ability to generate dialogue, monologues, and to evoke the off-stage or the off-screen. In Le navire Night, Marguerite Duras takes this potential to a radical level, in a meditation on love, desire, and language that — deconstructs conventional formal relationships between sound, image, and narrative. The story follows two lovers who are forbidden from meeting in person, sustaining their unfolding relationship through anonymous phone conversations carried out on unlisted lines left over from the German occupation of Paris.
