In this exuberant musical comedy, described by Chantal Akerman as ‘a cross between women's cinema, Jewish literature and musical theatre’, we follow the loves and heartbreaks that stir up a small and colourful shopping centre. Among dreamy hairdressers (including Lio, an actress and singer of Portuguese descent who was very famous in Belgium at the time), idle young men and characters stuck in sentimental routines, love triangles and unlikely reunions unfold. Jealousy, romantic disappointments, vanity and consumerism are some of the themes the filmmaker addresses in Golden Eighties, playing with the codes of the musical genre and giving her feminist gaze a new and unexpected pop twist.
