Considered one of the pillars of New Cinema — on a level with Os Verdes Anos, by Paulo Rocha, and Belarmino, by Fernando Lopes — Domingo à Tarde follows the romance between Jorge, an intelligent and solitary doctor, and a patient who is in the advanced stages of leukaemia. António Macedo’s first feature film reveals itself to be a bitter reflection on life and death notable for its sublime scenes, meticulous camera movements, a singular use of colour and sound and an innovative approach to editing. With a cast featuring Ruy de Carvalho, Isabel Ruth and Isabel de Castro.
