Narrated by the cyclist Jean Bobet and with music by Georges Delerue, Vive le Tour offers an intimate and engrossing look at the infamous Tour de France of 1962. Louis Malle’s camera mingles with onlookers in the villages as the athletes race past and complete each stage. Malle films not only the day-to-day tasks of the competition, such as nutrition and medical treatment, but also the moments of relaxation that are rarely captured on television, such as two cyclists sharing an ice cream — sport’s human dimension revealed on screen.
