Programme:
“The Syrians are filming their own death”: this is how The Pixelated Revolution begins, exploring the role of the mobile phone during the early months of the Syrian revolution protests. This lecture-performance, led by artist Rabih Mroué, examines the central role that mobile phone footage played during these events, in contrast to images produced by the Syrian regime. At the edge between life and death lies the “camera-eye,” a term coined by Mroué, granting these phones the power to act as a citizenry’s weapons, and shoot back against its oppression.
